Leaders Looking To Leverage AI Need To Think About Context - Forbes

As you think about how to leverage artificial intelligence in your business, the most important thing to understand is its limitations.

Most of those have to do with context.

This point was driven home to me a few years ago when I was working with the late Paul Allen. He had invited me to spend a few days at his AI research institute in Seattle. There, I met with the institute’s director and senior scientists, all of whom took understandably great pride in showing me what their machine could do. I was tremendously impressed, but I also wanted to know what it couldn’t do.

“Look at the picture behind you,” one of the scientists said, pointing to a photograph of a woman kayaking on Puget Sound that decorated the wall of the conference room. “The best AI can tell you that is a photograph of an approximately 30-year-old white female kayaking on Puget Sound, give you her geographic coordinates, and even provide the approximate date and time the photo was taken based on the angle of the shadows. What it can’t do is tell you what will happen to her if that kayak capsized.”

Context Is King

Artificial intelligence has come a long way in recent years and has shown remarkable progress in identifying patterns in large datasets. However, AI still struggles when it comes to understanding context and making sense of the data beyond its raw patterns. This limitation of AI has been a topic of discussion and research in the field of AI for several years.

One of the key reasons why AI struggles with context is because it lacks the ability to understand the meaning behind the data. It can identify patterns, but it cannot interpret them the way that a human can. For example, an AI algorithm can identify that there is a correlation between the number of ice cream sales and the temperature outside, but it cannot understand that this is because people tend to buy ice cream on hot days.

This sort of context can be extremely important when it comes to making good business decisions. So can sociological and political context.

AI is great at processing large amounts of data, but it lacks the ability to understand the nuances of the social, cultural, and historical factors that influence the data. For example, an AI algorithm may identify that a certain group of people are more likely to default on their loans, but it cannot understand that this may be due to systemic inequalities that prevent them from accessing financial resources.

Another reason why AI struggles with context is that it often relies on limited data inputs, which can lead to biased or inaccurate results. If an AI algorithm is trained on a dataset that predominantly includes data from one demographic group, it may struggle to make accurate predictions for other groups.

The lack of context can also lead to unintended consequences. For example, facial recognition technology has been criticized for its lack of accuracy in identifying individuals with darker skin tones. This is because the algorithms were trained on datasets that predominantly featured individuals with lighter skin tones, and the developers did not take into account the differences in facial features between different racial groups.

Pattern Recognition

Despite these limitations, AI has the potential to be a powerful tool in identifying patterns and making predictions. However, it is important to understand its limitations and use it responsibly. This means acknowledging the importance of context and ensuring that AI is not used in ways that perpetuate biases or lead to negative consequences.

One way to address the limitations of AI in understanding context is to incorporate human expertise into the development and implementation of AI algorithms. This can be done by involving experts from a range of fields in the development of AI algorithms and using their insights to inform the development process. It can also involve the use of human oversight in the decision-making process, to ensure that the AI algorithms are making decisions that align with human values.

Artificial intelligence can readily replace human workers in many areas – particularly those involving tedious and time-consuming tasks. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and others already are. However, the real opportunity presented by AI does not lie in replacing human decision making, but in augmenting it.
