Six things you need to know about the 2022-23 Women's Swimming and Diving team - Rochester Institute of Technology Athletics - RIT Athletics

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT women's swimming and diving team takes to the pool for the first time in 2022-23 on Saturday (Oct. 8) at RPI. Here are six things you need to know about this year's team.

Last Year in Liberty League
The Tigers finished second at the Liberty League Championship last season after recording a 6-2 record in dual meets. RIT won six events at Liberty League's and had four second-place finishers, notching 1339 points. Head coach Phil Baretela, diving coach Cliff Devries, and assistant coach Emily Lederman won Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year for their work with the women's and men's teams.

Scholar All-American Anna
Sophomore Anna Peshenko made quite the impression her first year at RIT, earning Liberty League Swimmer of the Year honors after winning the 400 medley, 100 breaststroke, and 200 breaststroke. She qualified to swim in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 400 IM at the Division III Championships in Indianapolis, recording the team's top times those events. Peshenko garnered CSCAA Scholar All-American.

Record Breaker(s)
RIT's record in the 50 freestyle was broken twice during last season's Liberty League Championships. In the 50-freestyle, co-captain Phoebe Huey broke the 50-freestyle record at the Liberty League Championship with a time of 24.02. Junior KhaVy Sangasy swam a 23.91 in the preliminary round of the 200-freestyle relay the following day to break Huey's record.

Sangasy returns for her junior season in 2022-23. Sangasy defended her 200 IM title at Liberty League's and came in second behind Peshenko in the 100 breaststroke. She was a member of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays and the second-place 200 medley relay team, while placing third in the 200 breaststroke and 400 medley relay.

Many Happy Returns
The Tigers return 20-of-26 members from last year's team. Senior Sam Russell won the 100 breaststroke in the Liberty League Championship in 2019-20 and has been a member of three Liberty League Championship-wining relays. She finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke in last season's Liberty League Championship, while senior Elle Holland was a member of last season's Liberty League-winning 400 freestyle relay team.

Sophomore Kimberly Dobie returns was part of RIT's Liberty League-winning 200 freestyle relay team. She was a Liberty League Rookie of the Week selection three times her first season.

Sophomore diver Kaylea Oliver returns after finishing sixth in the three-meter diving and eighth in one-meter diving competitions at Liberty League's. Oliver won Liberty League Diver of the Week honors (Nov. 8) after she won two individual events against Division II Gannon.

First-Year Tiger Sharks
This season's swimming and diving team includes six student-athletes in the first year. They are divers Aralyn Bairan and Meagan Kelly as well as swimmers Sydney DeLapp, Lunden Dinkel, Megan Metivier, and Lorelei Robinson.

Schedule
The Tigers will open the 2022-23 at Liberty League rival Rensselaer on Oct. 8. RIT hosts Alfred University on Oct. 15 and finishes the month at St. Lawrence against the Saints and Clarkson (Oct. 22). RIT hosts Gannon to begin the month of November, and travel to Ithaca to compete against the Bombers (Nov. 19). The Tigers will host the 30th annual Don Richards Invitational Dec. 2-3 to wrap up the first semester. The Tigers return to action on January 2 at New Year's Eve at Indian River. RIT hosts Hamilton (Jan. 7) before a road-meet at Rochester (Jan. 14). The Tigers return home to host Geneseo, Nazareth and Rochester (Jan. 21) and closes out the regular season hosting William Smith (Jan. 28).

RIT competes at the Liberty League Championship from February 15-18 hosted by Ithaca College. From there, the Tigers hope to compete in both the NCAA Championships and the NCAA Diving Regionals.
