Six things you need to know about the 2022 women's soccer team - Rochester Institute of Technology Athletics - RIT Athletics

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT women's soccer team is looking to improve on a 10-5-3 finish in 2021 that saw them reach the semifinals of the Liberty League tournament. With the team set to take the pitch on Sept. 2 against Denison, here are six things you need to know about this season's squad:

SENIOR SOCCER STANDOUTS
Senior forward Christine Cataldo-Smith was a first-team All-Liberty League selection in 2021. She finished second in the Liberty League with 11 goals and also ranked among the conference leaders with team-highs of 28 points and six assists. Despite losing the 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cataldo-Smith is currently fourth in RIT history with 58 career points and third with 24 career goals - only six shy of Christine Jung's program-record 30 set in 1990.

Another key senior this season is outside back Erin Allor. The Maryland native was named second-team All-Liberty League in 2021 after finishing third on on the team with a career-high nine points on three goals and three assists.

"We're really excited about our captains and our upperclass leadership this fall," said head coach Liz Masterson. "They are already doing an incredible job of leading the younger players."

OTHER HAPPY RETURNS
Graduate student back Jessica Wagner was named a second-team Liberty League all-star last season after leading a defense which was second in the conference with 0.89 goals against per game. Junior midfielder Jessica Gomez is also back after landing second-team All-Liberty League recognition, along with experienced senior Maddie Bullis.

GUARDIAN OF THE GOAL
Senior Darcie Jones takes over starting goalkeeper duties after sharing time last season with Alyssa Salls, who graduated last spring. Jones led the Liberty League with a 0.51 goals against average and an .857 save percentage in 12 starts last fall, only allowing five goals while compiling 30 saves.

MEET THE NEWBIES
The Tigers welcome seven new faces to the program this fall. Junior forward Teresa AviƱo transferrred after two season at NJCAA Illinois Central, while six newcomers include back Neena Damodaran, midfielder Jillian Antol, midfielder Sam Tran, back Roberta Moger, forward Elena Onodera and goalie Emily Sanchez

"Our new players are transitioning quickly into the team," says Masterson. "Credit to the returning players who have welcomed them with open arms."

MAKING THE RANK
The Tigers have scheduled a strong slate of opponents this season. Two of RIT's opponents started the year nationally ranked: No. 25 Geneseo and No. 5 William Smith. Six opponents finished the 2021 season regionally ranked, with Coach Masterson in particular singling out Denison and Otterbein as major out-of-region matchups. The Tigers last win over a nationally-ranked opponent was a 2-1 win over No. 25 Ithaca during the 2019 campaign.

2022 SCHEDULE
RIT will play a 16-game regular season slate comprised of 10 home matches, including five to start the fall. The opening homestand begins against Denison (Sept. 2), followed by a match against Kenyon (Sept. 3).
