Six things you need to know about the 2022 men's soccer team - Rochester Institute of Technology Athletics - RIT Athletics

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT men's soccer team opens the 2022 campaign on Thursday (Sept. 1) against Brockport. Here are the top six things you need to know about the Tigers heading into the season.

"We enjoyed good competitive success last season, and we are looking forward to seeing how our veterans and a solid group of new-comers form into an even more competitive side this year," said RIT head coach Bill Garno. "It has been a very busy preseason, which provided many special opportunities we are grateful for. We look forward to the start of the season on Doug May Field."

BACK FROM COSTA RICA
The Tigers started their season abroad with an exhibition tour of Costa Rica. While on the nine-day trip to Central America, the team finished 2-1 on the pitch. In addition, they took time to visit cultural locations across the country and visit a local school in San Jose. Sophomore midfielder David Merriman won two Man of the Match awards during the trip, while sophomore forward Jaden Longdon had a hat trick in the final game of the tour to earn Man of the Match honors.

DICKERS-BACK
Among the returning players is now-senior midfielder Randy Dickersbach. Named the men's soccer representative on last year's All-Tiger team, Dickersbach was also named to the second-team of the 2021 United Soccer Coaches All-Region III team and the All-Liberty League first team. Dickersbach tied with Longdon for the team lead in goals (5) and tied for second with now-senior Jonathan Cohen in total points (12). He also anchored the RIT defense that tied for second in the Liberty League for least goals allowed per game (0.72).

OTHER HAPPY RETURNS
Longdon proved to be a catalyst in his freshman year, leading the team in points (17), assists (7), and tying for goals (5) in a season that saw him named the Liberty League Rookie of the Year and a first-team All-Liberty League selection. With Cohen, senior defender Adam Wuest, and senior midfielder Joshua Price all return to join Longdon and Dickersbach, the top five goal-scorers from 2021, in 2022. Other key returning players are senior defender Zac Salas, junior defender and 2021 minutes-played leader Patrick Kenyon and sophomore midfielder Carlos Cardona, who was named an All-Liberty League Honorable Mention.

KEEP(ER) IT TOGETHER
Two of 2021's three goalkeepers have returned to the team, led by sophomore Jason Trapp, who started 14 matches and was named an All-Liberty League Honorable Mention after a season that saw him finish with seven wins and six shutouts. Also returning to the team is graduate student Gaurav Cheema. The Webster Schroeder graduate played in five games last season in his second campaign with RIT after beginning his college career winning an NJCAA National Championship with Genesee Community College. The lone newcomer goalie is first-year student Connor Cronin.

NEW BLOOD
Garno will welcome 10 newcomers to the squad in his 27th season at the helm. Besides Cronin, the team has added Brockport transfer midfielder Zachary Langelotti and first-year students Aidan Davis, Christian Gilmore, Mauricio Gonzalez, Tate Pottle, Ethan Koseoglu, Gabriel Zaninetti, Krzysztof Antiporowicz, and Nathan Dake.

2022 Schedule
The Tigers will play a 16-game regular season schedule, including nine games against Liberty League rivals and seven games at the newly renovated Doug May Field. The season begins with the Sept. 1 match at home against Brockport. After that, the Tigers will head on the road, facing Marietta (OH) on Sept. 4 and Geneseo on Sat. Sept. 10. The team returns home on Sept. 13 for the Derby against the University of Rochester, then heads out-of-state to face Mount Aloysius (PA) on Sept. 17. Liberty League play begins on Sept. 20 at home against Hobart, followed by a trip to Poughkeepsie to play Vassar. The Tigers will then face an out-of-conference foe in Houghton at home on Sept. 27 before opening October at Clarkson and then on Oct. 5 at Keuka. A three-match home stand will begin on Oct. 8 against St. Lawrence, followed by an Oct. 14 contest with RPI and an Oct. 15 face-off with Skidmore. RIT finishes the season on the road at Bard on Oct. 22, Ithaca on Oct. 25, and Union on Oct. 29.
