Did New York Yankees announcer and former MLB outfielder Carlos Beltrán just reveal the future of Aaron Judge? Well, you be the judge.
During a broadcast of the Yankees spring training game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, Beltrán seemed to tease that Judge -- currently slated for free agency after the 2022 season -- would be sticking around the Big Apple for a while longer thanks to a contract extension.
Beltran, appearing on a YES Network broadcast for the first time, said:
"I'm just glad to see him be able to create this new contract with the New York Yankees and be able to extend his stay here in New York. He's an incredible guy. He's a leader in the clubhouse. He's a guy that plays the game hard. I bet the message has to be from Judge, the Yankees are willing to commit like that for so long, and at the same time, they want to build around him. They understand he's the leader. I'm glad to see Aaron Judge increasing his stay here with the New York Yankees."
Beltrán walked his comments back moments later. Beltran said he wanted to "clarify" that he meant he "hopes" the team and Judge agree to an extension.
Beltrán, a likely future Hall of Famer, is joining YES Network as an analyst this season two years after losing his job as Mets manager. Monday marked his first time in the broadcast booth, and the 20-year MLB veteran made a rookie mistake. This also isn't the first time Beltrán has made headlines this week. Before his broadcast debut, he opened up about the Astros' 2017 sign-stealing scandal.
The Yankees and Judge have been in talks about a long-term extension, and the team plans to at least make Judge an offer before Opening Day on Thursday. New York general manager Brian Cashman was asked about Beltrán's comments after the game:
It remains to be seen if the two sides will reach an agreement, but Beltrán sure is ready to analyze an extension if it happens.
