A 6-year-old boy shopping with his parents. A soft-spoken software engineer who wanted to start his own business. A mother of two young girls.
Seven people were wounded Saturday when a gunman opened fire at a crowded outlet mall in Allen, killing eight people, before police shot him.
On Wednesday, Medical City Healthcare, which is treating those shot at three trauma facilities, said patients’ conditions have continued to improve, although none have been released from the hospital yet.
One patient remains in critical condition. Two patients are in fair condition, and three are now listed in good condition. It is unclear where the seventh patient is being treated or their condition.
Here’s what we know about four patients. Three others have not been identified.
William Cho
Six-year-old William Cho was shopping with his parents and 3-year-old brother so they could exchange a birthday present that did not fit him. He turned 6 four days before the shooting.
Parents Cindy and Kyu Cho and brother, James, were killed. Cho, who was wounded, has been released from the ICU and is doing well, according to a GoFundMe. He is the only surviving member of the family.
“An afternoon that should have been filled with light, love and celebration unfortunately was cut short by another mass shooting massacre,” the GoFundMe says.
Sreyas Dadi
Sreyas Dadi stopped by the mall Saturday afternoon with his friend, Aishwarya Thatikonda. The pair planned to shop for Thatikonda’s upcoming birthday dinner when gunfire erupted.
Dadi was shot three times — in his leg, his stomach and his arm. Thatikonda was killed.
The 26-year-old Frisco man is recovering from surgery and is communicating with family, mostly through hand gestures, his uncle, Kamal Nandikonda, said.
Dadi moved from India to Texas in 2019 to study computer science at UT Dallas. He works as a software engineer and wants to someday start his own software company, his uncle said.
Friends, co-workers and classmates have poured into the hospital since the shooting, his uncle said. His nephew is soft-spoken and loves Indian classical music.
Ilda Mendoza
Ilda Mendoza’s two daughters were killed in the shooting. Daniela was 11. Sofia was 8. Ilda remains in critical condition, according to an email sent by the girls’ school, Cox Elementary School in Sachse.
“Please pray for our now broken family. The girls have left a void that nothing in the world could ever fill,” a GoFundMe for the family reads. “Please pray for their mom, my sister, and her broken heart.”
Irvin Walker II
Irvin Walker II was shot twice — once in the chest, near his heart, and once in his right shoulder. Two days later, he came out of surgery singing, his family said.
The Louisiana native was in his car looking for a parking spot Saturday when the gunman began firing. Walker was one of the first people shot.
Surgery to remove bullet fragments was successful, and the family has started a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses. Walker is a father of one daughter and member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
“Thankfully and by the grace of GOD — he is in stable condition and expected to survive,” the family wrote.
An attorney for Walker, Daryl Washington, said victims of the shooting, their families, the Allen community and public deserve more answers related to the gunman’s motives and his access to an AR-15 variant rifle.
“We recognize the outcome could have been much different for Irvin,” Washington said. “We send our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the other victims and to the other survivors.”
