There isn’t much confidence about Christian Wood’s future with the Dallas Mavericks. GM Nico Harrison made it clear: Dallas is evaluating everything.
That doesn’t mean Wood has to like it. Wood, now an unrestricted free agent, took exception to the discussion around his Mavericks’ future and shared a brief tweet on Monday in response.
“I’ll tell the real story when the time is right,” Wood said in the tweet.
We know the truth . Stop putting out these 🧢 articles. I’ll tell the real story when the time is right .

Yes. Harrison and the Mavericks are evaluating everything. And that includes Wood. The proof was evident when the Mavericks added Dennis Lindsey to the front office and decided not to bring back former assistant Greg St. Jean. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has been open about wanting to keep both Kyrie Irving and head coach Jason Kidd.
And when asked about Wood, Harrison said: “This year is not acceptable,” Harrison said. “Nobody can be harder on myself than I am. I take my job serious and wins and losses and not reaching our goals, and so I feel for [fans], and the only confidence I can give them is we’re going to evaluate everything, and we’re not going to be in this position again.
“I’ve said this several times: When you don’t reach your goals, everybody needs to be evaluated, myself included, so I don’t put myself above being evaluated when you don’t reach your goals.”
The Mavericks have a difficult task ahead in rebuilding a team for the playoffs. Irving is also a free agent and Dallas’ first-round pick for 2023 is still up in the air.
Dallas has to improve its defense if it wants to sneak back into contention. Wood was efficient on offense with the Mavericks, but his individual defensive rating (allowing 116.7 points per 100 possessions) ranked last among all Mavericks who played at least 30 games.
The major maturity and punctuality concerns that hampered Wood’s performance and reputation while playing for six NBA teams over his first six professional seasons didn’t plague his first season in Dallas.
But one team official said the easiest part of lead defensive assistant Sean Sweeney’s season came Jan. 20 to Feb. 4 — when Wood missed eight games with a left thumb fracture — because Sweeney didn’t have to stand up off the bench and call out Wood’s defensive assignments on every possession each game.
