Warriors' Draymond Green breaks silence about his suspension - SFGATE

Draymond Green’s commitment to the content game continued Friday when the Golden State Warriors veteran released the latest episode of his podcast. In it, he commented on his latest controversy.

Green was suspended for Game 3 of the Warriors-Kings first-round series for stomping on Kings big man Domantas Sabonis, who had grabbed onto Green’s ankle during a fast break, in Game 2. The NBA acknowledged that the penalty came in part because of Green’s reputation for making dirty plays. He was also ejected from the remainder of Game 2 after the incident took place.

The 33-year-old was understandably still unhappy about missing Thursday’s game, which the Dubs won 114-97. He expressed more remorse for missing his team’s first win in the series than he did for getting the suspension in the first place. “I never knew you could be suspended for a flagrant-2 that happened seven years ago,” Green said on “The Draymond Green Show,” alluding to the league’s mention of his reputation.

“And I also didn’t know you’d get suspended for interacting with a crowd that’s flipping you double birds and yelling your name and chants that you suck,” he added. After the play, Green appeared to goad the crowd at Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center, which some pundits argued didn’t help his case with the league.

“Just not being able to participate in a dogfight with my brothers, that part is the worst,” he continued. “So I’m very thankful of the effort that guys put out there yesterday to save our season.” Green then heaped loads of praise onto Steph Curry for “holding it down” in his absence and Andrew Wiggins for “continuing to elevate his level of play.” He even shouted out the young Moses Moody, as well as Jonathan Kuminga and Kevon Looney, whom Green said he told to go get 20 rebounds before the game. (Looney indeed finished with 20 boards, nine of them on the offensive glass.)

The Warriors veteran then revealed that he was “on text” with Kris Weems, an assistant coach for player development, who was his “point of contact if I needed to get anything to the coaches” while he was watching at home. Ultimately, Green said, he couldn’t come up with anything useful because the game was going so well. “The way guys was playing, there was nothing to say,” he explained, “because even when shots weren’t falling, we were in control of the game.”

Green also spoke on the incidents with Philadelphia 76ers stars Joel Embiid and James Harden. Embiid was given a flagrant-1 foul for kicking Nets center Nic Claxton in the groin after the Brooklyn player stood over him, and Harden was ejected with a flagrant-2 for tapping Nets foward Royce O’Neale below the belt. Warriors fans were up in arms that their guy got tossed and suspended while Embiid and Harden made seemingly similar plays but got much more leniency. But Green didn’t take the bait.

“One thing you’re not going to see me say: ‘Man, this guy did that, and he didn’t get this,’” Green said. “That ain’t me. I don’t roll like that. No. 1, I’m never in favor of seeing a player get suspended. I’m never in favor of seeing a player get kicked out of a game. Buck stops there.”

True to form, Green said all demands for suspensions and ejections are “whack,” adding, “That’s not what fans came to see.”

Speaking of what fans go to games to see: Green is eligible to return to the Warriors lineup for Game 4 of the Golden State-Sacramento series, which tips off Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
