ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT men's cross country team opens the 2022 season at the Terry Rodenbeck Invitational at St. John Fisher, Friday. Here are six things you need to know about the squad this season.
REGIONALLY RANKED
RIT was ranked ninth in the USTFCCCA Niagara Region preseason rankings released last month. The Tigers look to build on their ninth-place finish at the Niagara Region Championships and their fifth-place showing at the Liberty League Championships last fall.
TOP-THREE FINISHES AND AN INDIVIDUAL WIN
The RIT team had two top-three finishes in invitationals in 2021. The first came in the season-opener, the Terry Rodenbeck Invitational, while the second came at Houghton's Highlander Invitational. The Tigers finished third in both events. RIT senior Aleksei Bingham, meanwhile, had the best individual finish for a Tiger in 2021 when he came in first out of 99 runners at the Highlander Invitational.
RUNNING RETURNERS
Including Bingham, the Tigers return 16 runners from last season's roster. Among the top returners are junior Richard Ellsworth - who trailed only Bingham among RIT runners at the Liberty League and Niagara Regional Championships last season - as well as Matt Chaikowsky, who was one of the team's leading freshman in 2021. Other key returning runners include sophomore Ryan Wisniewski, sophomore Daniel De Zutter, and junior Zachary Eckhardt.
COMING (BACK) TO CROSS COUNTRY
Senior Hassan Eissa returns to the team for the first time since 2019. Eissa was named All-Region in the 10,000 meters after finishing fourth at the Division III Atlantic Region Outdoor Championships last May. He also previously finished an All-Region eighth at the 2019 Atlantic Region Cross Country Championships.
RUNNING IN ROCHESTER
Although the Tigers don't have any true home events, they won't have to go far early in the season. Their first four events scheduled are in the Rochester area at invitationals hosted by St. John Fisher, the University of Rochester, Roberts Wesleyan, and Geneseo. Even late-season events will keep them in New York State. The only time the Tigers might find themselves running outside of the Empire State would be at the NCAA Division III Championships in Michigan.
2022 SCHEDULE
RIT is scheduled to complete in six meets during the regular season to gear up for the postseason. After racing at Fisher on Friday, the Tigers will return to competition at the University of Rochester's Yellowjacket Invitational (Sept. 17) at nearby Genesee Valley Park. The Tigers will compete at Roberts Wesleyan's Harry F. Anderson Invitational (Sept. 24) before heading to the Mike Woods Invitational at Geneseo (Oct. 1). RIT will complete the regular season at the Houghton Highlander Invitational (Oct. 8) and the Canisius Alumni Classic (Oct. 15). Vassar will host this year's Liberty League Championships in Poughkeepsie (Oct. 12) before St. Lawrence hosts the Niagara Region Championships (Nov. 12) in Canton, N.Y. Olivet in Lansing, Mich. will serve as hosts for the NCAA Division III Championships (Nov. 19) at the Forest Akers East Golf Club.
