OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Speaking for the first time since he injured his left knee 13 months ago, Baltimore Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins proved elusive Friday about whether he’s playing against the Miami Dolphins.
Asked whether he was suiting up Sunday, Dobbins paused for four seconds before saying, "Well … we’ll see. We’ll see. We’ll see. That’s the answer I got to give you. But I don’t know. I truly don’t know. I hope I am. Maybe I am. Maybe not.”
Dobbins, the Ravens’ top running back, had full participation in every practice this week, which is the first time that has happened this year. He is looking to play in his first regular season game since January 2021.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh declined to address any injury questions. He was later asked: If he had Dobbins on his fantasy football team, would he be inclined to start him? Harbaugh said he couldn’t answer the question because he isn’t allowed to have a fantasy football team.
Dobbins acknowledged it’s been “super hard” to be patient while his knee healed and said he’s extremely motivated to prove all the doubters on social media wrong. He confirmed that his injury was more severe than previously thought, indicating that he tore his ACL, LCL, meniscus and hamstring.
"If I only had that [a straight ACL tear], I would be back in seven months because of my work ethic and my God-given abilities and what he has blessed me with — to heal superfast,” Dobbins said. "All the stuff I had is more difficult, but nothing I can’t overcome.”
Dobbins was activated off the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 8. Over that time, he was critical of those on social media who pointed out that he had a limp.
But Dobbins has made significant progress over the past two weeks, looking stronger with his cutting ability and bursts.
Dobbins said he has spoken with Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who tore his ACL in 2020.
"Guys like us, his work ethic is amazing,” Dobbins said. "He’s not going to be stopped. That’s how I feel like. I can do that, too.”
Without Dobbins, the Ravens struggled to run the ball in a 24-9 win at the New York Jets on Sunday. Baltimore ran for 63 yards, its fewest in Lamar Jackson’s 50 career starts.
Dobbins scoffed when asked if the last mental hurdle is taking his first hit since getting injured.
“Nah, the thing I want to prove mentally [is] when I run for 100 yards against somebody,” he said with a smile.
