Six things you need to know about the 2022 Women's Volleyball Team - Rochester Institute of Technology Athletics - RIT Athletics

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT women's volleyball is set to open the 2022 season at the University of Rochester Invitational this Friday and Saturday. Here are six things you need to know about the squad heading into the campaign.

WHAT'S PAST IS PROLOGUE
RIT returns after finishing the 2021 campaign with a 25-5 record, including the first-ever 7-0 Liberty League regular season finish as well as an at-large bit to the 12th NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in program history. Seeded first in the region and awarded one of the tournament's eight NCAA Regional Championship sites, the Tigers defeated Framingham State, 3-0, in the opening round before falling to Wesleyan in the regional semifinals. Head Coach Jim Lodes and his assistants were named the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year.

"We are all looking forward to building off the momentum we finished with last season," said Lodes, who enters his 18th season on the Tiger sidelines. "While we will be looking for some new faces to step into more prominent roles this season, I'm confident our players will take the experience they had last year and use it to push us forward in 2022."

BIG SNEAKERS TO FILL
Three prominent members of 2021's prolific squad graduated last spring. Two-time All-American outside hitter Katie Hobler finished the season ranked 13th nationally with 4.18 kills per set and 19th with 422 total kills while leading the Liberty League with a .306 hitting percentage. She also garnered her second Third-Team All-America honor while being tabbed the AVCA Region III Player of the Year as well as the Liberty League Player of the Year for the second time. Taylor Higgins punctuated her career with Honorable Mention All-America and First-Team All-Region citations along with her fourth Liberty League All-Conference nod after finishing third in the conference with 3.33 kills per set, eighth with a .241 hitting percentage and ninth with 0.45 service aces per set. Starting libero Kiana Walker departed after finishing third in the Liberty League with 4.12 digs per set and fourth with 0.52 services aces per set.

E-NEFF SAID
Junior setter Sydney Neff returns after landing Honorable Mention All-American recognition last fall. Neff finished 10th nationally and first in the Liberty League with 10.58 assists per set, helping guide the tigers to 11th nationally with a .250 team hitting percentage. Her 889 total assists were second in the conference. In her first collegiate season following the pandemic, Neff was also named the AVCA Region III Freshman of the Year, AVCA First-Team All-Region, Liberty League Rookie of the Year, and First-Team All-Conference.

BIG UPS TO THE UPPERCLASSMEN
Returning upperclassmen include graduate student middle blocker Calista Gasper and junior defensive specialists Hailey Blixt and Jessica Klein. Gasper was an Honorable-Mention Liberty League pick last season after finishing eighth in the conference with a .241 hitting percentage and fourth with 0.72 blocks per game. Blixt led the Liberty League with 0.76 service aces per set while Klein was third for the Tigers with 207 digs. Senior middle blocker Emelia Mislan, and junior middle blockers Grace Phelan and Marie Fraser all look to move into bigger roles on the squad this fall.

RISING UP
Three other Tigers join Neff in their second campaigns with the squad. Sophomore Cat Vento led the team with 68 blocks and was fifth with 104 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Samantha Cox was third on the team with 124 kills and 49 blocks a season ago. Sophomore middle Liv Benard is also back after an injury-shortened rookie campaign.

2022 SCHEDULE
RIT opens the season opposite Buffalo State and Medaille on Friday night, before taking on Oneonta on Saturday at Rochester. The Tigers will then take a trip to Rhode Island to take on Salve Regina (Sept. 9) before facing host Johnson & Wales and Babson Sept. 10) the next day. RIT hosts Brockport (Sept. 14) before playing four matches during the RIT Invitational (Sept. 16-17). After hosting Rochester (Sept. 21), RIT is slated to play four times at the Scranton Invitational (Sept. 23-24). The squad travels to Ithaca (Sept. 28) for its Liberty League opener, before hosting Bard (Sept. 30), Morrisville and DeSales (Oct. 1) in a four-team round-robin. Three-consecutive conference matches at St. Lawrence (Oct. 7), Clarkson (Oct. 8) and home versus William Smith (Oct. 12) precede six-straight home matches, including four during Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend (Oct. 14-15) as well as conference showdowns with Union (Oct. 21) and Vassar (Oct. 22). The team concludes the regular season at host Skidmore (Oct. 28) with matches versus Plattsburgh and Alfred (Oct. 29).
