Biden Followed 7 Crisis Communication Best Practices In Updating U.S. About Omicron Covid Variant - Forbes

President Joe Biden’s update on Monday about the status of the Omicron Covid variant in the U.S. followed seven important crisis communication best practices.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Biden said he had the following messages to share with the American people about the variant:

  • “This variant is a cause for concern, not a cause for panic,” adding, “I’m sparing no effort, removing all roadblocks to keep the American people safe.”
  • The best protection against the Omicron variant, or any variant, is getting fully vaccinated and booster shots.
  • In the event that new vaccines or booster shots are needed to respond to the Omicron or other variants, his administration will accelerate their development without cutting corners.

Biden delivered his televised remarks after receiving a briefing from members of the White House Covid-19 response team about the latest developments related to the Omicron variant.

Best Practices

In his comments, Biden followed these crisis communication best practices:

  • Provide updates when appropriate and needed.
  • Tell people what you know when you know it.
  • Use all available communication tools and channels to ensure you reach everyone who is concerned about or affected by the crisis.
  • Cite the sources of your information and updates.
  • Do not repeat rumors or unverified information
  • Explain what the new information means for those who are impacted by the crisis.
  • When appropriate, include a call for action or list the next steps you want people to take in connection with the crisis.

Biden’s Sunday Briefing About Covid Crisis

The White House said yesterday that, “Following up on the regular briefings he had on Covid while traveling, the President met in person today with his Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and members of his White House COVID Response Team.

“Dr. Fauci and members of the Covid Response Team updated the President on the latest developments related to the Omicron variant. Dr. Fauci informed the President that while it will take approximately two more weeks to have more definitive information on the transmissibility, severity, and other characteristics of the variant, he continues to believe that existing vaccines are likely to provide a degree of protection against severe cases of Covid.

“Dr. Fauci also reiterated that boosters for fully vaccinated individuals provide the strongest available protection from Covid.

“The Covid Response Team’s immediate recommendation to all vaccinated adults is to get a booster shot as soon as possible; all adults are eligible for a booster if they were vaccinated six months ago or more with Pfizer or Moderna, or two months ago or more with Johnson & Johnson. Importantly, those adults and children who are not yet fully vaccinated should get vaccinated immediately.”
