In the same conversation that Joe Biden suggested multiple black women are being considered to be his running mate, the presumptive 2020 Democratic presidential nominee told a radio host that African-American voters undecided between supporting him or President Donald Trump “ain’t black.”

Biden apologized hours after the exchange with prominent radio host Charlamagne Tha God on the popular radio show “The Breakfast Club,” saying he “shouldn’t have been so cavalier” or “such a wise guy” in a call with the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce.

“No one should have to vote for any party based on their race or religion or background,” Biden said.

Biden made the comment after Charlamagne Tha God pressed him on reports that he is considering Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is white, to be vice president. The radio host told the former vice president that black voters “saved your political life in the primaries” and “have things they want from you.”

“I’m not acknowledging anybody who is being considered,” Biden responded. “But I guarantee you there are multiple black women being considered. Multiple.”

When a Biden aide then tried cutting the interview short, the host countered: “You can’t do that to black media.”

Biden then added: “If you’ve got a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or for Trump, then you ain’t black.”

The host countered that conversations about Biden’s running mate aren’t about President Donald Trump, whom many black voters view as racist.
