ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Children got to learn about different animal calls, feel wild animal pelts and more during the Camp Marshmallow program held Wednesday at the Ohio Valley Mall.

The weekly program is organized by the mall, the Belmont County Soil and Water Conservation District and the J.B. Green Team.

Tiltonsville resident Kelly Kramerick brought her great-niece Rachel Tucker to the program. She said it has taught the 5-year-old about nature and exploring.

“It keeps them curious,” she said of the children who participate.

Rayland resident Jacquelyn Wise accompanied her daughter Cara Williams, 7, to the camp. Cara and other children seemed thoroughly entertained when the conservation district’s wildlife specialist, Sterling Brumfield, demonstrated different animal calls.

He then asked the youngsters what animals they thought created such calls. Brumfield was accompanied by Samantha Hearn, the Agriculture & Education specialist for the conservation district.

“I like that this teaches them about animals and insects,” Wise said following the program.

The mall’s program assistant, Audrey Brahler, said Wednesday’s program was the final Camp Marshmallow of the summer. But starting next week will be another weekly program — Tuesdays for Toddlers at 11 a.m. She said it will include a craft, snack and storytime.

For those wanting more opportunities to learn about nature and animals, the conservation district is continuing its Barkcamp Nature Days at 4 p.m. Thursdays at the state park’s red barn. Today’s program is titled “Smokey Bear’s Fire Patrol;” July 22 features “Animal Furs and Skulls;” and July 29 is “Fishing Fun.”

The district is also planning a beginner fishing program for 9 a.m. Aug. 14, titled “Catch Some Fun,” at Barnesville Memorial Park.

Youth will learn the basics of fishing including casting, baiting and more. Participating children will receive a free fishing pole, tackle box and fishing supplies. To register, call 740-526-0027 or email captina.coordinator@gmail.com.
