The Kansas City Chiefs received the 2020 schedule on Thursday night as they prepare to defend their Super Bowl title. For a look at the full schedule, click here.
Here are five things to know about the schedule.
1. The Chiefs will kick off the season on Sept. 10 against the Houston Texans
Kansas City will host the NFL season-opener against the Houston Texans on Thursday, Sept. 10 at Arrowhead Stadium. The game will be a re-match of last year's epic AFC Divisional Round matchup that saw the Chiefs climb out of an early 24-point deficit as part of their march to the Super Bowl. It marked the fourth-largest comeback in NFL postseason history and the first time ever that a team trailed by 24+ points in the first half only to erase that deficit prior to halftime, setting up a much-anticipated re-match at Arrowhead.
It also pits two of the top young quarterbacks in the NFL against one another yet again in the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes and Houston's Deshaun Watson.
2. The schedule includes five primetime games
The Chiefs will be on the national stage early and often in 2020.
In addition to the season-opener against Houston on Thursday Night Football, the Chiefs will make two appearances on Sunday Night Football, one on Monday Night Football and another on Thursday Night Football. Arrowhead Stadium will be the site for two of the contests.
Here's a quick look at the primetime slate:
Sept. 10 (Week 1) vs. Houston on Thursday Night Football
Sept. 28 (Week 3) at Baltimore on Monday Night Football
Oct. 15 (Week 6) at Buffalo on Thursday Night Football
Nov. 22 (Week 11) at Las Vegas on Sunday Night Football
Dec. 6 (Week 13) vs. Denver on Sunday Night Football
Kansas City will travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens on Monday Night Football in Week 3, setting up another high-profile quarterback clash between Mahomes and reigning NFL MVP Lamer Jackson. Interestingly enough, the Ravens - who earned the No. 1 seed in the AFC postseason in 2019 - have lost just three regular-season games in Jackson's career as a starter and the Chiefs are responsible for two of them.
The Chiefs will be back in primetime in Week 6 with a trip to upstate New York to play the Buffalo Bills and third-year quarterback Josh Allen, whose impressive sophomore campaign in 2019 culminated in just Buffalo's second playoff berth in the last 20 years. It'll mark the Chiefs first trip to Buffalo since 2014.
The primetime slate continues with Kansas City's first-ever game in Las Vegas for a divisional bout against the Raiders on Sunday Night Football in Week 11. The Chiefs finished with a winning record at the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum in the all-time series between these old rivals and they'll look to start a new trend at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Lastly, Arrowhead will return to the national stage in Week 13 as the Chiefs take on the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football. Denver has assembled several young pieces around second-year quarterback Drew Lock, including first-round pick Jerry Jeudy at wide receiver and free agent signee Melvin Gordon at tailback, making for a potentially exiting divisional matchup at Arrowhead.
And while that concludes the Chiefs' primetime evening games in 2020, Kansas City will also play in five additional afternoon primetime contests in the 3:25 p.m. CT time slot. That means the Chiefs will take the national stage 10 times over the course of the 2020 campaign. Those games include:
Sept. 20 (Week 2) at the Los Angeles Chargers
Oct. 4 (Week 4) vs. New England
Oct. 25 (Week 7) at Denver
Nov. 29 (Week 12) at Tampa Bay
Dec. 20 (Week 15) at New Orleans
Simply put, the Chiefs will be on television in many parts of the country quite a bit.
3. The Chiefs will face five teams that made the postseason in 2019
This isn't a surprise, as the Chiefs' opponents for next season were locked into place when the 2019 campaign concluded, but now we know when each clash with last year's playoff teams will occur.
The aforementioned primetime matchups with the Texans, Ravens and Bills each feature teams that made the postseason in 2019. Additionally, the Chiefs will also face a pair of playoff teams from a year ago in the New England Patriots (Week 4) and New Orleans Saints (Week 15).
Kansas City's clash with New England will mark the seventh matchup between the two winningest squads in the NFL since 2014, but this will be the first one that doesn't feature quarterback Tom Brady. The 42-year-old Brady signed with the Buccaneers earlier this offseason, meaning New England will field a new starting signal caller for the first time in quite a while. In fact, with the exception of the entire 2008 season that Brady missed due to injury, the Patriots have been without the future Hall of Famer just five times since 2001.
The Saints and their high-powered offense, meanwhile, compiled a 13-3 record in 2019 behind veteran quarterback Drew Brees, who will be entering his 20th season in the NFL this upcoming season. Kansas City last traveled to New Orleans in 2012.
4. The Chiefs' bye week will occur in the latter portion of the year for a fourth-straight season
Kansas City's bye week falls in Week 10, marking a fourth-straight year that the Chiefs' bye will occur in Week 10 or later. That provides a week off late in the year as the team prepares for the homestretch of the campaign, and the numbers suggest that it helps. In fact, Kansas City is 16-7 following the bye week over the last three seasons, including an 8-0 stretch to close the 2019 season.
5. Kansas City's matchup with the new-look Buccaneers takes place in Week 12
Tampa Bay's acquisition of Brady and veteran tight end Rob Gronkowski has the football-watching world buzzing, setting the stage for a high-profile matchup between the Buccaneers and the reigning Super Bowl Champions.
The Buccaneers already had several talented players in place, including wide receivers Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, setting the stage for yet another exciting, late-season contest.
Single-game tickets will go on sale beginning on Friday, May 8 at 8 a.m. for Jackson County taxpayers, 11 a.m. for Chiefs Season Ticket Members and at noon for the public. Single-game tickets are subject to availability, dynamic pricing, and will be mobile entry only.
