Club learns about hypertufa pot-making | News, Sports, Jobs - The Inter-Mountain

ELKINS — For its annual garden tour, the Emma Scott Garden Club was invited to the home of club members Marian and Ken Hanscom to create their own hyperfufa pots to take home. This is a method that takes a mixture of portand cement, vermiculite and peat moss to create very natural, stone-like containers. They are especially great paired with succulents.

Though the containers look like stone, they are lighter in weight and easier to handle. Using almost any shape as a mold (plastic pots or boxes) the mixture (one part vermiculite or perlite, two parts peat moss and one part Portland cement) is mixed with enough water to create a stiff ball of material. It can then be pressed into a mold of your choice.

After a few days of drying, it can be removed from the mold and it is still pliable enough to be carved, trimmed, and decorated. Drainage holes may also be punched through the bottom. Over time, the pot will continue to cure and will be fully hardened in about three weeks.

Fifteen members gave it a try and many interesting pots, containers, and figures were created. Much reminiscing about making mud pies and enjoying the mess were shared. After the pots were made, the club enjoyed picnic lunches out on the Hanscom’s deck. The members also enjoyed touring their beautiful property, including the perennial and vegetable gardens.

Club president Linda Shomo thanked the Hanscoms for opening their home to the club and the very fun and interesting program. Shomo reminded club members about the upcoming pot luck and club meeting at the home of Pat Mayes and Dave Cutlip on Aug. 8 where a program about gourds will be presented.

She also discussed the plans to honor “Rosie the Riverter” on Sept. 6 in Elkins. One of the former club presidents, the late Bobbie Lamb, was a “Rosie” and she encouraged club members to participate in this celebration.

The Emma Scott Garden club usually meets the second Monday and is always welcoming new members. For more information, contact BJ McKenzie, membership chair, at 304-614-3079, or Linda Shomo, president, at 703-861-9351.
