Opposing coach makes boneheaded comment about Josh Heupel - atozsportsnashville.com

An anonymous SEC coach made an incredibly boneheaded comment about Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel in Lindy’s 2021 pre-season preview.

The comments from the anonymous coach actually started out on a positive note.

“I like Josh Heupel. He is going to be good on offense,” said the unnamed coach.

But then things went south.

The anonymous coach then questioned Heupel’s recruiting abilities in the SEC, saying the new UT head coach has “no clue” how to recruit in the SEC.

“My concern with Josh is his ability to recruit in an SEC environment,” said the coach. “He has no clue. Hiring (defensive line coach) Rodney Garner helps because he’s one of the founding fathers of SEC recruiting. I don’t know much about (defensive coordinator) Tim Banks from Penn State. It will be interesting to see what he can do with what he has.”

Those comments are ridiculous. It would be fair to say that I have no clue how to recruit in the SEC. I’ve never been a college football coach, I have no Power-5 experience and I’ve never spent a day on an SEC sideline outside of being a media member.

Heupel, however, has previous head coaching experience, he’s spent most of his career at Power-5 programs, and he’s coached in the SEC before.

Spending two years as Missouri’s offensive coordinator gave Heupel a front-row seat to the world of SEC recruiting.

And spending 10 years on Bob Stoops’ staff at Oklahoma (one of the most storied college football programs in the country) certainly helped prepare Heupel for the cutthroat nature of SEC recruiting.

There’s no doubt that Heupel will have to prove himself on the recruiting trail. But this is Tennessee — it’s not that difficult to recruit in Knoxville.

Butch Jones landed a couple of top 10 classes, after all.

It’s easy to make comments like this without a name attached. I have a feeling this coach will change his tune in a few years when Heupel has proved he can recruit just fine in the SEC.
