The Starbucks at Broadway and Pike is permanently closed, the company says. Now there are only 13 across Capitol Hill and the Central District.
Masked by pandemic plywood and temporary closures of other Capitol Hill locations of the Seattle coffee giant during ongoing protests, the permanent exit of the Starbucks in Broadway’s old State Bank building came last July, a spokesperson for the company told CHS this week.
“As part of Starbucks standard course of business, we continually evaluate our business to ensure a healthy store portfolio,” the spokesperson said.
The closure joins a long list of Capitol Hill venues that went out of business during the pandemic and will likely be part of another long roster of closures we find out about only as the economy more fully reopens after months of COVID-19 restrictions.

Coffee customers might not be mourning. The Starbucks counter in the QFC across the street remains active and cafes up and down Pike and Pine seem to have made it through the pandemic.
Starbucks, meanwhile, was forced to close some of its Capitol Hill locations during protests over the last year as black block demonstrators against police and international corporations targeted the shops with repeated property damage. CHS reported here on the November reopening of the E Olive Way Starbucks amid the protest vandalism.
Still, Starbucks is sorry for leaving a hole in the corner’s retail, food, and drink offerings.
“As difficult as this was, we made the right business decisions for the sake of Starbucks long-term growth,” the spokesperson said. “All Starbucks partners (employees) working at that store had the opportunity to transfer to one of our nearby locations. We are proud to have been part of the Seattle community and continue to serve our customers at our nearby locations.”
The exit leaves a cool old auto row-era building empty at street level. CHS wrote here about the State Bank building that was most recently a Tully’s before Starbucks moved in.
Neighboring nightclub Neighbours, meanwhile, might soon be kicking back into motion. The property remains on the market and suffered vandalism and break-ins during its long COVID-19 shutdown but club ownership has renewed its business filings this week after letting its incorporation lapse during the pandemic.
