From rent control and more executive power for Sacramento’s mayor to a bevy of regional races for local seats and Congressional office, results are trickling in for regional election races.
Pro tip: be patient. It may take days — or weeks — for ballots to be counted to have clarity on some of these contests.
Here’s a rundown of what Sacramento region election results look like now (updated at 10 p.m. on Tuesday night):
City of Sacramento Ballot Measures
In very early results, Measure A — that’s the so-called strong mayor proposal that would give Mayor Darrell Steinberg more executive power — is sitting at 57 percent of the voters casting “no,” and 42 percent of in favor.
Now, for some clarity: In 2018, we saw about 150,000 city voters chime in on Measure U. And so far this year, we’ve seen just over 90,000 ballots counted for Measure A. This suggests we have many more ballots to count.
Measure C, which would provide increased protections for renters, is at 62 percent “no” and 37 percent “yes.” To date, just over 90,000 ballots have been counted, about one-third of the total expected ballots.
City of Sacramento Races
There are two City Council seats up for grabs this fall.
In South Sacrmento’s district eight, school board member Mai Vang is at 50 percent and pastor Les Simmons is at 49 percent. Nearly 8,000 ballots have been cast.
What’s interesting: In the primary in 2016 — which was the last time this race was decided — only 8,600 votes were cast in this district. And 9,911 voted in the primary this past March.
In the North Sacramento race for the District 2 seat, it’s also close. Challenger Sean Loloee is at 53 percent and incumbent Allen Warren is at 47 percent. Some 7,300 ballots have been counted. More than 8,000 ballots were cast this past March during the primary.
Sacramento County Races
Supervisor Sue Frost is up for re-election and is sitting at 75 percent of the votes.
But all eyes are on district three. That’s where Gregg Fishman is at 52%, and Rich Desmond at 47%. Some 57,000 votes have been cast; there were approximately 75,000 cast in the primary election this past March.
Mayoral Races
In Elk Grove, Mayor Steve Ly is at 35%, challenger Bobbie Singh-Allen is at 47%. Nearly 40,000 ballots have been cast; four years ago, more than 68,000 votes in that race.
In Stockton, incumbent Mayor Michael Tubbs has 22,399 votes, and challenger Kevin J Lincoln II has 22,854.
Regional State Legislature Offices
In the state Senate, incumbent Megan Dahle (District 1) is at 55%. In district 3, state Sen. James Gallagher is at 59%. And state Sen. Susan Eggman is at 54%.
Over in the Assembly: Assemblyman Kevin Kiley is at 53%, Assemblyman Kevin McCarty is at 77%,
Regional Congressional Races
Incumbents are sitting with a majority of votes in regional races for the House of Representatives.
Rep. Doris Matsui is at 77%, Rep. John Garamendi is at 63%, Rep. Ami Bera is at 72%, Rep. Jerry McNerney is at 63% and Rep. Josh Harder is at 60%.
Some Republican lawmakers are in closer races, with incumbents Rep. Doug LaMalfa at 52% and Rep. Tom McClintock at 51%.
