Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be fully optimized for Xbox Series X and Series S, and the upgrades will come free to anyone who already owns the game.
The optimization launches Nov. 17, and it will also be available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers, where The Master Chief Collection has been part of the library since September 2018. The upgrades mean all of the included games will run at 120 frames per second, in both single-player campaign and multiplayer, with split-screen improvements and support for up to 4K resolution on Xbox Series X. Developer 343 Industries said back in August that all versions would soon receive keyboard-and-mouse support and cross-platform multiplayer capability.
Xbox announced the upgrade news on Tuesday morning. Halo: The Master Chief Collection launched in 2014 and comprises Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4. Xbox Game Pass for PC subscribers also have access to the collection, with Halo 3: ODST added to their libraries last month.
Although Xbox Series X and Series S launch on Nov. 10, Microsoft still hasn’t launched a new Halo game alongside a console since the original Halo on the first Xbox 19 years ago. Halo Infinite, the next entry in the first-person shooter series, was announced in 2018 and was originally slotted for a holiday 2020 launch. The COVID-19 pandemic, and other factors, caused developer 343 Industries to delay the game into 2021, however.
